Culture or cowardly barbarity – Bullfighting continues being a spirited discussion
Bullfighters are stars in the conservative society of Spain. One of these bullfighters is Enrique Ponce, one who repeatly appears in a gallery of photos in the magazine “Hola” as a recognition of his talent.
The conservative head of the regional government of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, wants bullfighting to be classified as “cultural patrimony of humanity” by Unesco & bullfighting to be made known as a valued tradition to the children in their schools. This, will also need a grant funded by public money, it seems with money from the EU for education & tourism.
The region with the most modern & economical strength, Cataluña, wants to ban bullfighting. In the Canary Isles it has been banned since 1991.
Animal protectors speak of a painful combat without the bull having any chance. It can be seen that the bulls are manipulated before the final showdown, by people on horseback, people on foot, many enemies against a single bull being badly threaten.
What a scandal! 600 million euros in grants for bullfighting
