Andaluz TV News
The site chosen for the celebration of the Doñana International Birdfair is the Dehesa de Abajo Nature Reserve. Located within the municipality of La Puebla del Río, less than 30 minutes away from Seville, its visitors centre and installations provide everything necessary to guarantee a successful event. It is an extremely interesting area with amazing natural values associated to three very different ecosystems: the flooded marshland, the wild olive tree forest and the pine forest.

With its 700 hectares, Dehesa de Abajo is the home of Europe’s largest colony of white storks, which build their nests in the wild olive trees partly covering the area. Some of the most representative bird species in Doñana can be found in the lagoon, called Cañada de la Rianzuela:flamingos, marbled teals, purple gallinules, white-headed ducks, coots and a large number of waterfowl, limicolae and ardeids.

The flooded areas are best to watch whiskered terns, spoonbills, red-crested pochards, mallards, little grebes, black-tailed godwits, etc. Horses and cows graze in the pastures, and raptors like black kites, red kites, booted eagles, ospreys and buzzards are spotted flying over the pines.

Mammals like the fox, the badger and the genet also live in Dehesa de Abajo. They are harder to see, but they find here the rabbits, wild fruits and invertebrates that are the basis of their diet. Currently, the Aznalcázar Pine Forest and Dehesa de Abajo are the new areas of expansion for the Iberian lynx, whose number is increasing every year.

The Dehesa de Abajo Nature Reserve is 25 km away from Seville and 13 km away from Isla Mayor. The nearest towns are Aznalcázar, La Puebla del Río and Isla Mayor.

From Seville, follow road SE-30 towards Coria del Río. Take exit 15 and drive along road A-8050, crossing the towns of Gelves, Coria del Río and La Puebla del Río. At the Venta del Cruce roundabout, keep straight on towards Aznalcázar and 300 metres ahead, at a second roundabout, take the second exit (leaving the exit to Aznalcázar to your right) and follow the indication to Dehesa de Abajo along the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation road. Your will find the entry to the Dehesa de Abajo Nature Reserve 3 km ahead, on your right.
